I retired from Cairo School District after serving 34 years as a teacher and administrator. I am a lifelong resident of Cairo and extremely proud and happy to live here. I have three(3) children and ten (10) grandchildren, whom I adore. Family is everything! I am a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, 2115 Washington Ave. I serve on the Mother's Ministry, Financial Officer, Trustee Board, and Chair of the Culinary Ministry. I am a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Epsilon Lambda Omega Chapter, where I have served in various positions including: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and currently as Membership Chair. Every dollar that we raise is given back to the community because, the Sorority's main focus is service to all mankind. I am an active member of the Cairo Heritage Foundation, where we organize and put on many exciting events to uplift the community and the surrounding areas. I am a former six (6) year Councilman At Large (Mayor Pro Tem) of the Cairo City Council. I am a supporter and volunteer with the Cairo Historical Preservation Project, Inc. This Project is working to rebuild and restore historical sites in Cairo. I believe in Cairo and have worked in many areas that would benefit the entire community.

Stephen Tarver

Steven L.Tarver Sr. is an original member of the Rise Community Market Steering Committee and now serves as Marketing Committee Chair on the Board of Directors. He is the Co-founder and President of Men of Power Women of Strength Inc. which has advocated in Cairo, IL since 2017. After serving in the US Army, he went on to earn Associate Degrees in Management and Marketing from Midlands Technical College and a Computer Administrative Specialist Certification from Centura College both located in Columbia, SC. Mr. Tarver grew up in Cairo, left at the age of 12, and has returned with a vision to help his hometown community. He has actively advocated for the youth and the community since his return in 2012. He is also a Board member of Cairo School District 1, the Cairo Housing Task Force, Southern Illinois food Access Regional Advisory Committee, Tri-County Youth Recreation Program, and Chair of the Alexander Residential Advisory Council. “I am truly excited about the opening of Rise Community Market and the spark it has had on the restoration of our beloved City”, he can be heard saying along with his favorite slogan “Stay in the Fight”.

Carol Childress

Carol Childress is a native of Cairo, a wife, mother of three, and a graduate of the class of 1985. She continued her education by becoming a Certified Nurse's Aide and then entered private care, where she discovered her passion for caring and helping others in the community for over 30 years. She currently serves as the Assistant Membership Chair of the PTO, is a member of the Sumner/Cairo High School Committee, and an Alexander County election judge. While continuing her private care, she also volunteers at the Happy Days Senior Citizens Center. Inspired by her dedication to helping others and her daughter, the late Charisse Matthews, Carol joined the Alexander/Pulaski County Branch of the NAACP and is now an active Silver Life Member. She received an award from Rise Community Market for her determination and dedication to enhancing the community and was awarded first place by the Cairo Historical Preservation Project for the "Home is Where the Heart Is" contest. Carol enjoys spending time with the elderly, helping children, volunteering in the community when needed, and is a current member of the Seventh Day Assembly of Israel in Cairo, Illinois.

Erica Brazier

I graduated from Cairo High School is 1995. I am currently employed through Cairo School District as the Supervisor of Parent Education for the Alexander County Parents as Teachers Prenatal to Three year old program. I have over twenty (20) years of experience working in the early childhood field. For the past sixteen years, my focus has been on child development, family well-being and breaking down barriers within our community. Serving the community, has and will always be, one of my main joys! I am a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, 2115 Washington Ave. I serve as the Youth Sunday School Teacher and a Youth Ministry Leader. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Carbondale Alumni Chapter where building relationships within my community, promoting the importance of learning and breaking down barriers for the community I serve are essential. It is my belief that learning about the community’s needs starts with one on one relationships. Through these relationships and the knowledge I have gained, I will continue to serve through the Rise Community Market Board.
